Introduction
a.
Hook/Context (why did the author choose this topic? what is the social/political/economical/historical background?)
i.
The fast development of technology and the increasing use of social media has created a society in which the security of personal information cannot be guaranteed anymore.
b.
Text Type, Author/Brand/Organization, Year, Source of Publication, Title of Text
c.
Explicit + Implicit Purpose (what is the conveyed message?)
i.
The author criticizes contemporary users’ over-dependence on smartphones.
d.
Audience + Justification (which group of people is the text directed to? who would be interested in this text?)
i.
Broadly, the cartoonist targets fans of her own works but more specifically, those who are interested in reading about the implications of technology on modern society.
e.
Thesis Statement (1 sentence answer to the guiding question = C)
i.
Divide by umbrella techniques or ideas or purposes or audiences = A
2.
Body Paragraphs (ideally 3~5 paragraphs; follow order of your thesis)
a.
Topic Sentence (1 sentence explaining A → B → C)
i.
The cartoonist uses rhetorical questions and careful combinations of diction (A) to shed light on the negative impacts of smartphones (B) and thus characterizing the world of the protagonist as extremely toxic (C).
b.
Technique #1: Rhetorical question
i.
Example/Evidence: panel 4
ii.
Effect/Analysis: The use of consecutive rhetorical questions reveals the identity crisis of the protagonist who seems to have lost his uniqueness among other smartphone users. Through this, the cartoonist highlights the inevitability of conformity in a society that normalizes the use of smartphones.
c.
Technique #2: Oxymoron
i.
Example/Evidence: “authentic fake”
ii.
Effect/Analysis: Moreover, there is a juxtaposition of two opposing words describing the sound of a camera. This oxymoron not only showcases the “fakeness” of camera shutter sounds on smartphones but also indicates the merge of reality and “fragmented reality”. This again connects back to the detrimental effects of the over-incorporation of smartphones in our everyday lives.
d.
Technique #3: Extended Metaphor
i.
Example/Evidence: “join the hive”, “panopticon hive”
ii.
Effect/Analysis: Furthermore, the cartoonist uses “hive” as an extended metaphor to compare the working bees to the general smartphone users and the queen bee to the “authorities and corporate” who surveille information inputted by users through their devices. As a result, this goes beyond exposing the effects of smartphones on users to showing the clear power dynamic that exists in the protagonists’ world.
e.
Concluding Sentence (1 sentence rephrasing the topic sentence)
3.
Conclusion
a.
Restatement of thesis statement (1 sentence summarizing the entire essay in relation to the guiding question)
b.
